“Elastic Observability with rich analytics and machine learning capabilities allows development and operations teams to get contextualized information that cuts through the complexity, enabling users to quickly find the root cause.

“Elastic leverages its industry-standard search platform that received over 56,000 GitHub stars to date to deliver a single solution for customers to observe and protect their systems.”
–Torsten Volk, Managing Research Director at EMA

This award is driven by EMA’s exhaustive, quantitative research into the top challenges and use cases facing developers, DevOps, SREs, IT professionals, and business professionals. The award does not involve vendor participation and is a true reflection of how these problems are solved by practitioners in the real world.

Complexity of cloud applications requires an observability solution

According to EMA’s research, observability is the number one DevOps challenge, with availability and security also making the top three. As organizations continue to rapidly adopt and grow their digital footprints in multi-cloud and hybrid environments along with distributed architectures, DevOps and SRE teams are often left with tons of data that they need to sift through to find the root cause of a problem.

All these moving parts have introduced an extraordinary amount of complexity into the lives of development teams. EMA research shows that the number of cloud-native technologies discussed on StackOverflow increased from 478 to 1,733 between 2017 and 2021, a 343% increase. And the number of combinations of technologies being discussed saw a 527% increase. These numbers and percentages help quantify the exponential growth of complexity that teams are experiencing today.

In fact, based on research, EMA estimates that software engineers spend 50% of their time on overhead tasks, resulting in lost productivity, slower innovation, and increased downtime. Delays in root cause analysis and fixing application issues also end up creating a poor customer experience. The Elastic Observability solution enables enterprises to solve these challenges faster by delivering actionable insights.

Using data, analytics, and machine learning to detect and resolve application issues

Elastic Observability is built on a search and analytics platform that natively ingests telemetry data of any type or source with high dimensionality and cardinality, adds context, and correlates it for proactive detection and faster root cause analysis. Elastic’s out-of-the-box and customizable machine intelligence automatically detects anomalies across all data, significantly reducing mean time to detection (MTTD) and mean time to response (MTTR), increasing developer productivity, and accelerating innovation.

In EMA’s research for business impact, Elastic Observability delivered:

  • Increased developer productivity
  • Open-source benefits without increase in operating cost or risk
  • Continuous compliance through a unified management and operations layer
  • Faster releases through continuous compliance
  • Increase in security through built-in SIEM
  • Rapid automated machine learning-driven root cause analysis of application performance issues
  • Rapid scalability through federated architecture and centralized agent management with unified telemetry
